Tall, dark, and . . . does not fit with my life plan.

When my dad marries into the most incredible found family I've ever seen, I make a lot of new friends. One of them is six years old and immediately volunteers his dad to show me around the ranch. Mason is adorable. His dad is tall, brooding, and absolutely not part of my plans.

Kent has a whole backstory with betrayal written in it. He's decided love isn't for him anymore — he's just here to be the best dad he can be. I respect that. I do.

Except I'm visiting the ranch more than I used to. And every night I'm back in New York, I call for reading time. Because Mason needs the consistency. That's definitely the reason.

Then there's an accidental New Year's kiss, and everything gets complicated. He's ready. I pull back. And Kent — who has been hurt before — retreats. He tries to hide it from Mason.
